Knight Ridder - let the bidding begin

What a stark contrast. As Vegas buzzes with the latest and greatest consumer electronics devices here to power the next generation of internet services delivering digital news, information, music and movies to all and any every branch of our lives, and as online ad sales just keep soaring through the roof and so too Google and Yahoo's valuations, poor old traditional print based newspaper group, Knight Ridder, has thrown in the towel and is up for sale.

Knight Ridder, the second-largest US newspaper publisher, is scheduled to hold final presentations for bidders on Monday as it seeks to arrange its own sale.

Bidders for Knight Ridder, which publishes the Miami Herald and Philadelphia Inquirer along with 30 other daily papers, are expected to include Gannett and McClatchy, two of the biggest newspaper publishers in the US.

Further consolidation may be the only way for the traditional print industry to try and retain readers and revenues against the tireless onslought of competition from internet portals and web sites. Knight Ridder is just one of many such groups struggling to find direction in the digital 2000's.
