Microsoft plugs Windows hole early

Microsoft has bowed to pressure from security experts and published an official patch to correct one of the biggest-ever security holes in its Windows operating system five days earlier than expected.

The patch was officially due on 10 Jan. It is interesting to see Microsoft a) bowing to outside pressure more and getting a patch out earlier than they really wanted (i.e. being more responsive a la internet era) b) moving faster.

If the patch is as good as they say it is, this has to ultimately be a triumph for Microsoft. Their response cycles may be improving.

But, let's see if the quality is there too.
